Helvetica Love

Helvetica Love

Who doesn’t love Helvetica? I know I do! Today I received my first tattoo. I wanted to get something that would never go out of style, so I went ahead and got ‘Helvetica’ tattooed on the back of my arm just above my elbow. To be more specific, Helvetica Medium.

A lot of people who don’t know much about typography and graphic design keep asking me what Helvetica is and the importance of it. My response is something like this:

‘Helvetica modernized type as we know it today. It sends a message to people in a very noncontroversial way. You can’t judge Helvetica. Helvetica can say it all. It can say ‘I love you, I hate you, Will you marry me?’ in a way that communicates effectively and always looks good. Helvetica makes life simple.’

You like font and graphic design talk so here is a nice little video I found awhile back that made me happy, yet sad. You might have seen this already but we’ll see.

  11. Thank ya Rob! Yeah, it was kind of a crazy idea I thought up the other week and decided ‘Why not!’ The kerning looks a bit off between the T and I but it is looking way more balanced now that it has healed :) Haha. If you end up doing it, I’d love to see a picture! Haha. We can compare who’s is better :)

  12. Narshada, I saw that. I haven’t had the time to comment it though. Graham Smith is the master mind behind this project. I can’t wait for the site to launch. I am interested in knowing what it will consist of.

  13. Why not Gotham. Hm, I actually really appreciate the history and meaning behind Helvetica. I don’t know too much of the history behind Gotham. It is a great typeface though. I love it! I am a bit of a sans serif junky :) Gotham is the ‘font of hope,’ so to speak! I know it was used widely in the Obama campaign and is still being used as his signature font. Gotham is a very nicely designed font. Just like Helvetica, you see it used for a lot of things in every day life such as signage.

  15. I got mine across my right wrist over two years ago and I’ve never looked back! Love it! :D

  16. Yes! I knew there had to be some more people out there who had it tattooed on them!

ps: I really love the ‘love evolution’ logo in your portfolio. Very creative!

  17. :) I just recently read that interview. He did actually give Helvetica props as an extremely well designed typeface, but yes it is overused in the wrong places. It is not the typefaces fault, its the designers judgment! Haha.

Ah yes, a velvet ant…’jokingly stated to be powerful enough to kill a cow!’ So they say, haha. I love your blog. Your ugly website post may have been the funniest thing I have read in awhile.
